FOMO # 16. Saturday 06.09.12: KITSUNÉ AMERICA Presents: HEARTSREVOLUTION / DWNTWN / GIRAFFAGE @ Echoplex

What is Kitsuné?

Kitsuné is the brainchild of Gildas Loaec & Masaya Kuroki, the meeting between a young dynamic entrepreneur from Brittany and an architecture student who switched to fashion design. They both decided to create a structure that would combine all the things they were into, clothes, image and music of course. (http://www.kitsune.fr/journal/labelsartists/)

"Under the same name, Kitsuné the music label works with artists and musicians from around the world, remixing songs and curating dance compilations. Kitsuné has released singles and compilations with a bevy of big name acts in the dance, pop and electronic world, including Cut Copy, Fred Falke, Hot Chip, La Roux, Simian Mobile Disco, Phoenix and Yelle…In honor of Maison Kitsuné’s arrival in the U.S., which also coincides with the company’s 10-year anniversary, the label is releasing “ Kitsuné America” — its first all-American compilation. The album includes  a mix of newcomers (Computer Magic, Selebrities, St. Lucia and Frances Rose), as well as more established acts like Childish Gambino.” (Mimi Wong - ABC News)

Some of their signed artists include Two Door Cinema Club, Logo and Delphic, as well as Heartsrevolution and Is Tropical, who will be playing at The Echoplex June 9th!

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MISS OUT:

Described by New Musical Express as “the model for the modern pop group,” this electronic, power pop duo consists of Ben Pollock and Leyla ‘Lo, and when listening, I am reminded of another duo, Crystal Castles. But they have their own unique sound that cannot really be compared to any other artist.

According to Justine Dunk on Covacool.com, “Being cool is not a crime, it’s a privilege. And on that note…if you enjoy a little electro thrash/metal/noisy hipster goodness then you will probably take a liking to these bad ass New Yorkers. ‘Switchblade’ is epic. It has one of those weirdly and unexpectedly catchy beats that you just can’t help busting a move to.”

The Guardian also named them one of their new band’s of the day: “In a parallel universe, their songs, a series of yelps over DIY shards of rhythm with chanted choruses and slim, size-zero melodies, would all be smash hits. Hearts Revolution… call themselves thrash-metal electronicists and boy/grrrl revolutionaries, with echoes in the latter phrase of the likes of Huggy Bear from the early-90s riot grrrl era. The buzz: “They are dedicated to progressing the state of music and pushing change in all the right places.” The truth: They’re a Crystal Castles you don’t have to pretend to like.”

Their debut album, RIDE OR DIE, is to be released on Kitsuné worldwide (excluding N.America)

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MISS OUT:

On Facebook they describe themselves as “kind of a folk band, but…just happen to make electronic music.” DWNTWN is Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda, and they are such a buzzed about band, already covered by Earmilk, RCRD LBL, Buzznet, Arjan Writes, Artist Direct, Paper Mag, Hype Machine and much more.

"DWNTWN, an electro-pop band with catchy melodies and twinkling production stylings, came to be in the summer of 2010 when Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda both went through bummer breakups and spent most weekends driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco trying to get away. That eventually led to the two of them writing on-the-go folk song demos that they’d record to their iPhone. Then in early 2011 this dream team duo, Robert the multi instrumentalist / vocalist and Jamie the lead vocalist, transformed these early demos to songs that span genres from electro to new wave, to indie and pop. The band has been compared to everything from New Order, M83, and Sleigh Bells." - (SXSW)

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MISS OUT:

The Fader reviewed the song “Feels”: “If you were a fan of water parks as a kid, you probably remember a ride called the Lazy River: ushered by a gentle current, you’d drift around on an inner tube through shadowy tunnels, rain showers and waterfalls. On “Feels,” San Francisco producer Charlie Yin bka Giraffage captures the Lazy River’s aquatic tranquility. Beneath a sprinkling of percussion, the track ambles through lukewarm tones while soothing grow old with you vocals drift in and out like little rounded waves.”
