FOMO #20. Alt-J at Echo with Erika Spring (Au Revoir Simone) Wednesday 8.1.12

To the computer savvy, Alt-J is the keyboard shortcut that creates the math symbol ∆ on a Mac, but it is also the name of the quartet from Cambridge whose music is so exciting and inventive that it does not even really fit one genre.

Alt-J is made up of Gwil Sainsbury (guitarist/bassist), Joe Newman (guitar/vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards) and Thom Green (drums), who all  met at Leeds, UK University back in ‘07. Their first demo, , showcased songs like tracks ‘Breezeblocks’ and ‘Tessellate’, and now, they have released their debut album, “An Awesome Wave”.

BBC raved about Alt-J: “Comparing Alt-J to contemporary artists or listing their influences is almost pointless. Each song blurs, stutters, and explodes across a tide of instruments and ideas, fresh and addictive…This album spans every workable idea, genre, and influence that can be crammed under the guitar music umbrella, yet it never feels disorientating. Instead, what swoons gracefully through speakers is an entirely comprehendible and accessible collection of beautiful pop songs.”

The Guardian also named Alt-J their new band of the day a few months ago, describing their music as “rich and quirky enough to match the imagistic literacy of the lyrics, from the majestic, cinematic sweep of Intro onwards,” also mentioning that “there is an approach to rhythm and arrangement that suggests an olde worlde take on dubstep, trip-hop and electronica.”

Alt-J have been compared to bands ranging from Radiohead to Fleet Foxes to Foals, and their clever and unique music will have you listening on repeat, trying to make sense of it all, but enjoying it nonetheless.

Tickets for their show at the Echo are going fast and will sell out! Make sure to not miss them this time around!
